Newly wealthy Christopher Newman (Matthew Modine) travels to Europe and falls for a young, pretty Frenchwoman named Claire (Aisling O'Sullivan), but her snobbish mother (Diana Rigg) is not impressed with the nouveau riche American in this adaptation of Henry James's novel. When Christopher learns some shocking information from the family's servant, he decides to use it to advance his plan to marry Claire.
