Director Jacques Rivette's meditation on love and friendship begins with Julien (Jerzy Radziwilowicz), a craftsman who fixes clocks but can't quite repair his broken-down romantic life. Good thing his paramour, Marie (Emmanuelle Béart), is committed, for he doesn't seem to know where their relationship is headed. But when Marie starts acting odd, Julien must rely on the woman he's blackmailing, Madame X (Anne Brochet), to arrive at the truth.
