Isabelle Adjani earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination and a César (France's version of the Oscar) as the real-life daughter of novelist Victor Hugo (author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables). The script, taken from Adele Hugo's diaries, recounts her obsession with English soldier Lt. Albert Pinson in 1863 Halifax, Nova Scotia. Director François Truffaut can be spotted as the soldier she mistakes for Pinson.
