Joseph L. Mankiewicz's drama paints a rosier picture of U.S. involvement in French Indochine than Graham Greene's provocative 1955 novel. The story centers on British journalist Fowler (Michael Redgrave) and U.S. official Pyle (Audie Murphy). Fowler covers the region's civil war and lives with his Vietnamese girlfriend. When the two men meet and Pyle steals Fowler's lover, Fowler informs the communists that Pyle is selling arms to their enemy.
