Against all odds, lone wolf Andreas (Max von Sydow) strikes up a hesitant friendship with a crippled widow, Anna (Liv Ullmann), introduced to him by married friends (Bibi Andersson, Erland Josephson) who have their share of difficulties. Andreas and Anna fall in love, but disturbing revelations about each other's past lead to a violent outburst that cripples their bliss.
