In the 1800s, Ishi's (Graham Greene) entire Indian tribe was slaughtered, leaving him as the only survivor. Now, in 1911, Ishi has come out of hiding after years of living in isolation. Anthropologist Alfred Kroeber (Jon Voight) learns of Ishi's story and is immediately taken with the man's courage. Eager to learn the tribe's history, Kroeber takes Ishi in and devotes his studies to finding out the truth.
