During the Revolutionary War era, Matt Howard (Cary Grant) dedicates himself to the cause of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in his native city of Williamsburg, Virginia. At Howard's side through his years as a frontiersman and his life among the "landed gentry" is his wife (Martha Scott). Highlights include the Boston Tea Party and firebrand Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty" speech.
