The High and the Mighty

John Wayne heads the stellar cast as co-pilot Dan Roman in this granddaddy of airplane disaster movies. On a flight from Honolulu to San Francisco, a plane develops engine trouble, and it falls to Roman to land the craft safely when smug pilot John Sullivan (Robert Stack) loses his nerve. Meanwhile, the 22 passengers aboard take stock of their lives in William Wellman's tautly directed drama, which bagged an Oscar for the film's haunting score.
