World War II Lt. Cmdr. Ericson (Jack Hawkins) heads the HMS Compass Rose, a British ship that safeguards convoys making their way across the Atlantic. During his last mission, he lost most of his men in a U-boat attack. Now, with a new, inexperienced crew, Ericson's patience and ability are put to the ultimate test, and he's forced to make a brutal choice between annihilating an enemy boat and ensuring the safety of his sailors.
