In 1865 Kyoto during Japan's Shogun era, two commanders of a samurai militia (Yoichi Sai and Takeshi Kitano) recruit an effeminate young swordsman, Sozaburo Kano (Ryuhei Matsuda), whose beauty begins to unearth buried passions among his fellow warriors. Acclaimed Japanese director Nagisa Oshima's unsettling and hauntingly poetic tale of desire was nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
