Sounder

A family of black sharecroppers in Depression-era Louisiana faces a crisis when the father (Carl Lumbly) is convicted of a petty crime and sent to a prison camp. Months pass and the mother (Suzzanne Douglass) sends her 11-year-old son (Daniel Lee Robertson III), whose beloved dog provides the film's name, to visit his father. The trip becomes a coming-of-age odyssey for the boy. Kevin Hooks directs (he played the boy in the 1972 film version).
