Mob underling Ben Grace (John Payne) is ordered to dig up some dirt on anti-crime mayoral candidate Frank Jansen, but love gets dangerously in the way when Ben falls for Jansen's redheaded secretary, June (Rhonda Fleming). More trouble brews in the form of June's paroled klepto sister, Dorothy (Arlene Dahl), in director Allan Dwan's 1956 moody and menacing crime drama, a rare film noir filmed in wide-screen color.
