Brothers Amit (Amitabh Bachchan), a writer, and Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor), a military pilot, share a strong fraternal bond. So when Shekhar is killed in the line of duty, Amit feels obligated to marry his brother's pregnant fiancée (Jaya Bhaduri), leaving his own girlfriend, Chandni (Rekha), heartbroken. But years later, when Amit and the now married Chandni meet unexpectedly, they rekindle their romance, despite their marital vows.
