Nineteenth-century French silk merchant Herve Joncour (Michael Pitt) goes on a trading mission to Japan, where he's bewitched by the beautiful concubine of Baron Baldabiou (Alfred Molina). But their relationship doesn't end when he returns home to his wife (Keira Knightley). Secretly, Herve maintains a long-distance romance with the woman through translated letters. François Girard directs this sumptuous adaptation of Alessandro Barrico's novel.
