Director Vittoria de Sica's neorealist masterpiece captures the widespread destitution that afflicted many children in Italy in the years immediately following World War II. Giuseppe (Rinaldo Smordoni) and Pasquale (Franco Interlenghi) try to eke out an existence by shining shoes for a living. But their lives take a desperate turn when they're caught by military police and sent to prison.
