Strapped for cash, Jerry (Gary Cooper) sells custody of the daughter he's never met, so his girlfriend, Toni (Carole Lombard), leaves him in disgust. But when Jerry meets little Penelope (Shirley Temple), he's charmed by the curly-headed angel. He regains custody and Toni returns, but Jerry still can't find decent means of support. When he takes part in a jewelry heist, he decides the wealthy victim would provide a better life for Penelope.
