When a truculent American GI (Red Buttons) falls for a Japanese maiden (Miyoshi Umeki), his friend Major Gruver (Marlon Brando) tries to dissuade the smitten soldier from marrying the girl; the Army, you see, frowns on miscegenation. Though Gruver disagrees with the military's policy, after falling in love with a beautiful Kabuki dancer, he unexpectedly finds himself grappling with bias. Buttons and Umeki won Oscars for their supporting roles.
