Set amid political unrest in 1916 Ireland, this epic tale stars Sarah Miles as Rosy Ryan, a naive colleen trapped in a loveless marriage to schoolmaster Charles Shaughnessy (Robert Mitchum). When a handsome British officer arrives in town, his tryst with Rosy sets tongues wagging and leads the locals to suspect Rosy of being an informant after a rebel operation is sabotaged. John Mills won an Oscar for his supporting turn as the village half-wit.
