A Godfather-esque epic (continued in the film Tragic Hero) follows Kwok (Andy Lau) and his adopted brother, Yung (Alex Man), who owes money to a gambling king. To help his brother, Kwok turns to a gang leader named Chai (Chow Yun Fat) for protection -- but Yung soon begins to envy Kwok for being Chai's favorite. When a rival gangster (Chun Hiang Ko) discovers Chai is harboring a fugitive, he moves to expel him from the underworld.
