Beatty also heads the cast as radical American correspondent John Reed, who, along with his paramour, Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton), gets caught up in the spirit, euphoria and aftermath of Russia's 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Maureen Stapleton received an Academy Award for her supporting turn as anarchist Emma Goldman.
