Exiled from her homeland of Argentina for over 20 years, 42-year-old Carmen (Cecilia Roth) returns home to say good-bye to her dying father and manage his inheritance. As Carmen's return dredges painful memories of her imprisonment and torture during the dictatorship, she struggles to patch up her tattered relationships. Emotionally distressed, Carmen begins to lead a double life and enters into a relationship with a hustler (Gael Garcia Bernal).
