Born in Germany in the ninth century, Englishwoman Johanna von Ingelheim (Johanna Wokalek) disguises herself as a man, then gradually works her way into increasingly powerful Vatican positions -- finally ascending to the level of pope. Adapted from Donna Woolfolk Cross's best-selling medieval novel based on an enduring legend, this visually spectacular drama co-stars David Wenham, Iain Glen and John Goodman as Pope Sergius.
