Pope Joan

A present-day female evangelist (Liv Ullman) strongly feels that she resembles the legendary Pope Joan and goes to see her psychiatrist (Keir Dullea) in hopes of discovering that she's Pope Joan incarnate. Suddenly, she's transported back 1,000 years, when Joan is the mistress of artistic monk Adrian (Maximilian Schell). What follows is a series of frightening instances that force Joan to alter her identity to appear as if she's a man.
