Ne'er-do-well rolling stone Hal Carter (William Holden) rides the rails into a quiet Kansas community hoping his wealthy college chum Alan (Cliff Robertson) will offer him a "respectable" job. Though Hal is an arrogant blowhard, his brash sexuality magnetizes the ladies -- including Alan's girl, Madge Owens (Kim Novak). Convinced by kith and kin that Hal is a loser, Madge is ready to end their romance. Will she listen to her head or her heart?
