In this bizarre but warm-hearted musical written by Dennis Potter, Arthur (Steve Martin), a traveling sheet music salesman, entices an innocent teacher (Bernadette Peters) in Depression-era Chicago. When Arthur and Eileen set out on a series of misadventures, their bleak world turns to song and dance in a series of lavish Busby Berkeley-style musical numbers. Co-star Christopher Walken shines in a tap-dance striptease number.
