Faced with waning sexual potency, an older husband goes to desperate lengths to restore his virility and satisfy his young bride. When more conventional methods fail, he orchestrates an elaborate scheme involving his wife, daughter and his daughter's lover, an ill-advised plan that leads to tragedy. Based on a novel by Junichirô Tanizaki, director Kon Ichikawa's ironic masterpiece captured the 1960 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
