None But the Lonely Heart
(1944)|
Itinerant Cockney ne'er-do-well Ernie Mott (Cary Grant, cast against type) is entrenched in his skid-row lifestyle. But when he learns that his mother (Ethel Barrymore, who collected a Best Supporting Actress Oscar) is terminally ill, Ernie returns home and begins to change his selfish ways. Barry Fitzgerald and Jane Wyatt provide solid support in this absorbing slice-of-life drama from writer-director Clifford Odets.
