Moulin Rouge

  (1952)
John Huston directs this colorful drama chronicling the life of 19th-century French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (portrayed by Jose Ferrer). While centering on Toulouse-Lautrec's painful deformity (the growth of his legs was stunted by a childhood accident), his miserable love life and his attempts to drown his sorrows in drink, the film also serves as a biography of 1890s Paris and its most famous landmark, the Moulin Rouge café.
