Fresh from high school, Marjorie (Natalie Wood) has a bright future ahead. Her parents hope she'll choose college and a prosperous husband, but spending the summer as a camp counselor leads her down a different path. Even though Broadway success Wally (Martin Milner) wants to woo Marjorie, the man of her dreams turns out to be Noel (Gene Kelly), a small-time, carefree composer working for a summer-stock theater company across the lake.
