Madame Bovary

On trial for writing an indecent novel, French author Gustave Flaubert (James Mason) must prove that his famous book Madame Bovary is in fact a moral story. Flaubert becomes the narrator for this story within a story about the lovely but unhappy Emma Bovary (Jennifer Jones), who seeks love outside a stifling marriage. The affairs at first bring excitement, but Flaubert's tale makes clear that her adulterous choices will destroy her family.
