Helmut Berger stars as Bavaria's notoriously "mad" king, Ludwig II, in Italian director Luchino Visconti's lavish biopic, which earned an Oscar nod for Best Costume Design. Set in the 19th century, the film follows the quirks of the eccentric Ludwig, who was so taken with German composer Richard Wagner's work that the sovereign became obsessed with building real-life fairy-tale castles in his kingdom. Trevor Howard plays the manipulative Wagner.
