Love is crazy, as a veteran (Warren Beatty) finds out when he returns to his hometown to serve the needs of the mentally ill. His professionalism and caution about all things romantic are tested when he meets his first client, the sexaholic schizophrenic Lilith (Jean Seberg), with whom he winds up romantically involved. He questions his poor decision, though, when he starts treating Stephen (Peter Fonda), a man who's also fallen for Lilith.
