This adaptation of Henry Fielding's novel stars Peter Firth in the title role as a servant working for Sir Thomas Booby (Peter Bull). Joseph is enamored of the housemaid, Fanny Goodwill (Natalie Ogle), but Lady Booby (Ann-Margret) has designs on him, and her advances intensify when her husband dies. After rejecting her, Joseph is beaten -- the first of many steps the noblewoman takes to prevent him from a happily ever after with Fanny.
