Looking to score big with a new dog-racing track, paroled racketeer Johnny Eager (Robert Taylor) finds his plans stymied by the prosecutor (Edward Arnold) who sent Johnny to stir. But all bets are off when his chance encounter and subsequent romance with the barrister's gullible stepdaughter (Lana Turner) put Johnny in the driver's seat. Playing Johnny's loyal but self-loathing confidante, Van Heflin netted a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
