A Nova Scotia fishing village serves as the backdrop for this well-crafted weeper about a deaf-mute named Belinda McDonald (Jane Wyman, who earned top Oscar honors for her performance). When kindly doctor Robert Richardson (Lew Ayres) takes a professional interest in Belinda and teaches her to communicate, a wonderful new world unfolds for her. But things turn ugly after the town bully (Stephen McNally) rapes Belinda and she ends up pregnant.
