In the midst of the Hundred Years' War, illiterate farm girl Joan (Sandrine Bonnaire) leaves the village of Domremy and pressures a captain to take her to meet the Dauphin (André Marcon), who then allows her to join an army expedition to Orleans. French new wave pioneer Jacques Rivette fashions an intimate epic of Joan of Arc's historic rise to power in the first half of his two-part portrait of the seminal French heroine.
