Kihachi Okamoto directs this harrowing historical drama based on the novel by Soichi Oya, chronicling the tense 24-hour period surrounding Japan's submission to Allied forces on Aug. 15, 1945. Faced with millions of civilian and military casualties and the obliteration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Emperor Hirohito (Koshiro Matsumoto) is asked to help a divided government decide the country's fate by issuing a declaration of surrender.
