Joseph "Megs" Megessey (Robert De Niro) is a traumatized and volatile Vietnam veteran trying to deal with his postwar anxiety, while his Army buddy Dave (Ed Harris) drowns nightmares in a bottle of booze. The two suffering vets are inexorably tied to each other, albeit with much ambivalence and sharing only common terrors. When Dave's sister Martha (Kathy Baker) invites Megs to stay with them, emotions escalate and violence threatens to erupt.
