Gilbert Valence (Michel Piccoli), an aging Parisian actor, is in the prime of his career. One night during a performance, Valence receives the terrible news that his family has been killed in a car accident. Undefeated, Valence continues with the simple daily activities that bring him joy, but when his agent forces him into an English-language film of Joyce's Ulysses, Valence begins to feel overwhelmed and quickly changes his situation.
