Returning war veteran James Allen (Muni) descends into darkness when his architectural aspirations dissolve and he finds himself serving 10 years on bogus armed-robbery charges. Unable to suffer the dehumanization of a chain gang, Allen slips off his shackles and escapes … only to have a scheming woman and the corrupt penal system betray him again.
