Bille August's hauntingly romantic adaptation of Isabel Allende's novel follows three generations of a South American family, starting in 1926. Esteban (Jeremy Irons) vows to marry Rosa, the daughter of a rich man. But when Rosa dies before Esteban saves enough money to do so, he instead marries her younger sister (Merle Streep). Years later, when their daughter (Winona Ryder) falls for a revolutionary (Antonio Banderas), the family is thrown into turmoil.
