Czechoslovakian loyalist Dr. Franz Zvoboda (Brian Donlevy) does his part to defend his country during the Nazi occupation -- which unfortunately means killing a Nazi officer. Zvoboda finds shelter with fellow Czech patriot Professor Novotny (Walter Brennan), but the Gestapo threatens to murder 400 Prague residents if the killer refuses to step forward. Czech citizens accuse the Nazis themselves of committing the crime.
