After the untimely death of his wife, grieving police chief Carl Kanisky (Dolph Sweet) asks her friend, the sassy, headstrong Nellie Ruth "Nell" Harper (Nell Carter), to serve as a surrogate, live-in den mother to his three daughters, Katie (Kari Michaelson), Julie (Lauri Hendler) and Samantha (Lara Jill Miller). The first season of this Emmy-nominated sitcom features guest appearances by Danny Glover, Rue McClanahan and Helen Hunt.
