Based on Olivia Manning's autobiographical novels, this BBC miniseries follows university professor Guy Pringle (Kenneth Branagh) and his wife, Harriet (Emma Thompson), British expatriates living in 1939 Rumania. As World War II's storm clouds loom, Guy gets embroiled in political resistance activities, neglecting Harriet and setting the stage for a compelling tale of a union tested by unintentional betrayal, insensitivity and a world in turmoil.
