Featuring archival images and eye-opening interviews, this sobering PBS special details the story of a long-forgotten Ellis Island hospital that serviced a huge influx of immigrants in an effort to protect Americans from immigrant-borne disease. The site of 350 births and thousands of deaths, the facility became the front line of defense for preventing the spread of contagions without using antibiotics, which were not yet available.
