Ultra-conservative Ruth Loomis (Jill Clayburgh) has just become the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Supreme Court. Seven of her male counterparts appreciate and accept their new female colleague, but one -- the steadfast liberal Dan Snow (Walter Matthau) -- does not. The two immediately butt heads and continue to be a source of irritation for each other -- until Loomis's late husband is accused of wrongdoing and Snow comes to her defense.
