Danish director Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves) made his directorial debut (in English) with this bizarre combination of film noir, science fiction and surrealism. In a post-holocaust future (depicted in striking sepia tones), a serial killer is preying on teenage girls. The stymied detective on the case (Michael Elphick) submits to a special form of hypnosis to improve his chances of catching the culprit.
