Fast-talking con man Tom Turner (Greg Kinnear) is sentenced to employment in the dead letter department of the post office to avoid a prison stretch. Ever the opportunist, Turner plunders all the valuables he can lay his greedy hands on from undeliverable mail and discarded letters. But when he mistakenly sends money (meant for his bookie) to the address of a letter intended for "God," Turner becomes an improbable hero to the entire city.
