As the heartbroken Karrer (Miklós Székely B.) obsesses over memories of his former lover (Vali Kerekes), he grows increasingly certain that his life -- now marked by solitude and despair -- has no meaning. Notable for its stark black-and-white style, this haunting film noir was supposedly one of philosopher Susan Sontag's favorite movies and helped confirm director Bela Tarr's status as a master of Hungarian cinema.
