In this distinctive biopic, innovative Chinese director Stanley Kwan offers a unique glimpse into the life of China's first prima donna of film, Ruan Lingyu (Maggie Cheung) -- a troubled silver screen icon whose life is so plagued with betrayal and vicious gossip that it eventually ends in premature suicide. Kwan intercuts the film with interviews with Ruan's contemporaries, as well as actual footage showcasing the rebellious star's work.
